WE were glued to the finals of Cruft’s on Sunday, an delighted to see Philippe, the tall dark and handsome Giant Schnauzer, take the Best in Show title. I was impressed by this dog when he won the Working Dog group on Saturday, as a working dog myself.

I was also cheered to see that second place was taken by winner of the Pastoral Group, a Samoyed called Ch Vandreem Imperial Hermioni. I have a Samoyed friend called Sammy, who is a regular at my local – the Famous Royal Oak, where we dogs are very welcome. Dog friendly pubs are rare in London, and sometimes there are four or five dogs in the bar, usually much better behaved than the humans! A Crufts winner might think he is too grand to slum it at the pub, but we often see some human celebs at the bar so a few famous dogs – apart from me, of course – would fit in well.

I have been back in London for a few days and Mum and Dad took me for a treat to one of my top haunts – the ‘Famous’ Royal Oak in St James’ Lane, Muswell Hill. It is the most dog friendly pub I know. Well behaved dogs are free to walk round and socialise: I love meeting new people. Most other pubs in Muswell Hill are either fancy so-called bars that ban dogs but welcome drunken chavs. The Royal Oak is friendly, serves great wine and if you are lucky the landlord may give the dogs some corned beef treats.

The pub is called the Black Horse and it serves food at lunchtime and in the evenings. As you can see it is a lovely old pub with an open fire. Dogs are allowed in the pub with their families, as long as they behave – I mean the family of course!
